Start of the project “Harmonized fire statistics as a tool for enhancing pan-European fire safety efforts”
            (EU FIRESTAT 2)

On February 13, 2026 the project EU FIRESTAT 2 was launched, with an expected duration of 4 years. The
project is financed by European Commission’s Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry,
Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW).

Teched is part of the consortium that will be implementing the project together with:

  • Efectis, France (group leader)

  • The Danish Institute of Fire and Security Technology (DBI), Denmark

  • The University of Liverpool (UoL), UK

  • Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute (ZAG), Slovenia

  • International Association of Fire and Rescue Services (CTIF), Slovenia

The aim of the project is to harmonize fire safety statistics of EU Member States to provide competent
authorities with reliable fire data which is crucial in reducing building fires, informing policy, improving
building codes, and designing effective preventive measures, thereby enhancing cooperation and information
sharing among Member States.

The project builds on the results of a pilot project, “Closing data gaps and paving the way for pan-European
fire safety efforts” (EU FIRESTAT) carried out by the European Commission between 2020 and 2022, in
particular by applying the developed and validated data collection methodology.

Project EU FIRESTAT 2 will test and refine the framework developed in the pilot project through design and
implementation of an IT system and related database for collecting and utilizing fire safety data at
authoritative levels (national, regional and local). Data collection points will be equipped with a
structured training programme to enable their effective participation in testing the implemented database
and the data collection process, and support the identification and implementation of necessary
improvements.

The consortium will present cost and benefit estimates of the implementation of the data collection system
developed and tested in the project as well as a roll-out plan for an EU-wide fire safety data and
information collection system.

Teched will be primarily involved in Task 2 of the project as the lead of development of the web-based
database and supporting software solution for access to the database, which will collect and store fire
safety incidents and data from EU Member States and produce agreed reports, as well as in Task 4 which
covers the organisation of testing the database with EU Member States, collecting their feedback through an
established helpdesk system or targeted surveys, and continuous improvement of the database.
